Pictures inspire words

PICTURES INSPIRE WORDS While the Nobody’s Home exhibition was taking place at The Lighthouse in Glasgow, I received a message from Susan Irvine of Kingsbury Episcopi (I’d never heard of it either), in Somerset. She asked if there were plans for the exhibition to travel further afield. She also asked if I was OK with her using the images as inspiration for her writing. “Fine by me”, I replied. A week later Susan gave up waiting for news of the […]

Nobody’s Home in Glasgow

NOBODY’S HOME IN GLASGOW 52 hours in Glasgow: a tale of two radio interviews, an exhibition opening, chatting on the telly and wasting time in the clouds above Benbecula. Wednesday July 20th 6.00am: set off to Stornoway airport to catch the 8.25am direct flight to Glasgow. The plan was to arrive in Glasgow at 9.25am, head straight to The Lighthouse to oversee and help hang all the prints for the official opening of Nobody’s Home the following day. I get […]

Scottish Field, Jan 2016… behind the scenes

SCOTTISH FIELD, JAN 2016… BEHIND THE SCENES A behind the scenes look at the Scottish Field article, including some of Angus Blackburn’s photos that didn’t appear in the mag. It’s in the shops now. See the published article here. Must admit I was surprised when I got a call from Kirsty Smyth of Scottish Field a few months ago. She was looking to do a “lifestyle/culture” feature for the mag. I was aware of Scottish Field but I’d never actually […]

As Seen on TV, grand tours of the scottish islands, paul murton, landward, bbc alba

As Seen On TV

AS SEEN ON TV… The knock-on effect of the Leaving Home exhibition continues… in recent months I’ve appeared on three BBC TV programmes, revisiting some of the houses I’ve been photographing over the past five years. 1. Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands The first to be broadcast was Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands. I collect hitch-hiking presenter Paul Murton in a 1967 Volkswagen; rented for the day from Harris Classic Campers. Following a brief tour of the island, […]

Pardon My French, LM magazine, Elisabeth Blanchet

Pardon My French…

PARDON MY FRENCH Photographer Elisabeth Blanchet called in for a chat and a few photos this summer. The results have just been published  in the latest issue of LM – a magazine distributed throughout Belgium and northern France. Unfortunately my command of the French language doesn’t extend to providing an accurate translation. I scraped an ‘O’ level pass in French a couple of weeks after my sixteenth birthday, just before I joined a punk rock band called Buzzcocks. I tried […]

War Memorials, Part 2: Uists & Barra

WAR MEMORIALS, PART 2: UISTS & BARRA The second part of the War Memorials project saw me depart from Leverburgh aboard the MV Loch Portain, across the Sound of Harris to Berneray. Continuing south through North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay, followed by another ferry crossing to Barra. Landing on Berneray, the first war memorial of the day was about a mile from the ferry terminal. I had to ask someone where it was. Although I’ve visited Berneray several […]

War Memorials, Part 1: Lewis & Harris

WAR MEMORIALS, PART 1: LEWIS & HARRIS Earlier this year I was commissioned by the Gaelic Arts Agency (Pròiseact nan Ealan) to photograph  a series of War Memorials throughout the Western Isles as part of a project commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War 1. The resulting images are being incorporated into large display panels as part of a touring exhibition which will visit a number of venues in the Western Isles and further afield during the remainder of 2014 […]

Pairc Cairn

Pairc Cairn

PAIRC CAIRN The Islands Book Trust publish a new book this month. Recovering from the Clearances features my photo of the Pairc Cairn on the front cover. The memorial was commissioned in 1994 and erected in memory of the Pairc Deer Raiders, a group of local crofters who in 1887 killed some of the local laird’s deer in an effort to draw attention to their own poverty and deprivation. The so-called ‘deer raiders’ were put on trial, but acquitted of rioting, […]

La’al Bothy

LA’AL BOTHY Small but perfectly formed, La’al Bothy, on the Isle of Harris will be available to rent as self-catering holiday accommodation in time for the summer months. The compact residence has been designed and built by Alan and Ellen McDougall, next to their house in Scarista, on the west coast of Harris. The building was originally intended to serve duty as a garage and storage space. Plans changed and it’s now nearing the end of its transformation into a […]
