Old School

Homes and Interiors Scotland

Old school gets new lease of life.

Cliasmol school – once known as the smallest in Scotland – closed its gates for the final time in June 2014. With only four pupils, the decision was taken taken to close the school as the roll was due to fall to just two the following term.

In 2015 it was put up for sale. Marion and Colin McNeill purchased the old school. Marion’s family home is nearby. They approached Porteous Architecture, the Harris-based practice run by Duncan and Fiona Porteous, to help them convert it into a smart, functional new home

Shortly after completion, I called round to photograph the (now former) school. It was a cloudless sunny day in March, one week before lockdown.

It’s great to see the results appear across seven pages in the September/October 2020 issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland magazine, with the added bonus of making it on to the front page too.
