Stargazing

STARGAZING The BBC have been running a live TV programme over the past three nights called ‘Stargazing Live‘. I got a message via facebook suggesting I contribute a few of my night photos. I checked the web link and discovered the BBC have set up a dedicated flickr page: BBC Sky at Night and Stargazing LIVE, inviting contributions from anyone wishing to share their pics of the moon, stars, planets and the night sky. I had a quick dig through […]

Sheep Rustling in Manish

A man got out of the car, clambered over the fence and walked slowly towards me, shining a torch in my face. I could have retaliated with my Lenser T7 but chose not to because he’d have been blinded for a week. Bear in mind this is after 8pm on a November night and despite the full moon, it’s too dark for either of us to make out what the other is doing, or about to do.

Whaling Station Startrails

Whaling Station Startrails

I’ve been trying to get a decent night shot of this place for the past 2 years. 2011 has been a poor year in terms of clear skies coinciding with the full moon, therefore severely limiting photo opportunities for the aspiring night photographer. This month came up trumps and the night of November 10th and into the early hours of November 11th saw a super bright full moon accompanied by almost cloudless skies.

Night Photography Beginners Guide, Part 3: Essential Accessories

Before venturing out on a long night shoot session, three items I find indispensable… tripod battery grip shutter release cable On my first night shoot, I tried getting by without two of the above but very quickly decided I needed all three before my next attempt. 1. Tripod I already had a budget tripod purchased from Jessops many years earlier. It worked OK for fast exposure snapshot type pics but for long exposures it wasn’t sturdy enough. I needed something […]

Long exposures during daylight hours

LONG EXPOSURES DURING DAYTIME Cloud and  water movement are transformed when using a neutral density filter, allowing you to take long exposure photographs in bright sunlight without the risk of blowing out the highlights. The technique takes a little effort but once you figure it out, you’ve added another useful photo technique to your skill set. As this category takes shape I’ll explain the theory, technique and practicalities of shooting dramatic long exposure photographs.

Portraits: strobist style with off-camera lighting

BANG! Low budget strobist techniques explored – flashguns, wireless triggers, shoot through umbrellas, softboxes etc. This shot used 2 x Yong-Nuo 560 flash guns. One at camera right, in front of subject into reflective umbrella, the other bare at camera left, 45° behind subject.

Welcome to the Flying Monk Blog!

WELCOME TO THE BLOG! A forum to discuss night photography, light painting and other techniques used to create dramatic, eye-catching images in low light conditions. I’m also going to look at other styles of photography, including long exposure daylight shots, HDR, star trails and off-camera flash.
