MOONLIGHTING: buy the book

MOONLIGHTING: BUY THE BOOK Following recent TV appearances, I’ve been asked by a number of people if there’s a photo book of my work. Officially, the answer has been ‘no’. However, I did put together a collection of long exposure night photographs in 2011. The book contains 40 of my favourite night photos taken over a two year period (2009 to 2011). I used Blurb, a self-publishing company, to produce a 25cm x 20cm full colour photo book, primarily to […]

Jimmy Bullar's Tea Hut, 1947 Bedford

Jimmy Bullar’s Tea Hut

JIMMY BULLAR’S TEA HUT This strange contraption is living out the remainder of its days in the middle of a peat bog on the Isle of Lewis. I stumbled across it (almost literally), in February 2011 during a full moon night photography trek to the shielings of Cuishader. When bad weather cut my outing short, depriving me of a decent shot of this weird vehicle, I knew I’d have to return to complete unfinished business. In the meantime I dug […]

Torn trousers and moaning about the weather

TORN TROUSERS AND MOANING ABOUT THEE WEATHER Slim pickings from last month’s full moon period. All told, 2012 hasn’t been a great year in terms of favourable weather conditions for full moon night photography in the Outer Hebrides. I got a few shots in February but January, March and April were complete write-offs due to heavy cloud and rain. May, June and July are always a no-show due to the long summer days we see at our northerly latitude i.e. […]

Fishing boat, Goat Island, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis

Proceed to Goat Island

PROCEED TO GOAT ISLAND Shot yesterday on Goat Island – the industrial boatyard section of Stornoway. This old fishing boat, ‘Proceed’, caught my eye. The sky and cloud combination was looking good for a long exposure shot: brilliant blue sky with a smattering of fluffy clouds, plus a gentle breeze to guarantee some cloud movement during the exposure. Camera tech stuff: I composed the image with the camera mounted on a tripod. With the camera in Manual mode I set […]

Elvis visits the Outer Hebrides (again!)

The spirit of Elvis Presley is alive and well on the Isle of Lewis, as he sings “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!” to disinterested locals on the bus to Grimshader.

Shieling at Cuishader, Ness, Isle of Lewis

Grinneas nan Eilean

GRINNEAS NAN EILEAN & GRASSHOPPERS HOTEL An Lanntair’s annual open art exhibition, Grinneas nan Eilean, opens tomorrow (Saturday December 3rd) and runs until January 29th 2012. Grinneas is held annually and hosts work by sculptors, photographers and artists from around the Outer Hebrides. My contribution to this year’s exhibition consists of four limited edition prints, all shot at night during 2011. Three of the prints feature shielings at Cuishader, Isle of Lewis. The fourth is of a ruined stone house […]

Sheep Rustling in Manish

A man got out of the car, clambered over the fence and walked slowly towards me, shining a torch in my face. I could have retaliated with my Lenser T7 but chose not to because he’d have been blinded for a week. Bear in mind this is after 8pm on a November night and despite the full moon, it’s too dark for either of us to make out what the other is doing, or about to do.

Balallan Post Office – past and present

BALALLAN POST OFFICE Back in August of this year I received an order for a print of my Balallan Post Office photo from Kate Morgan, all the way from Australia. Kate mentioned the post office had previously belonged to her great aunt and uncle, Joan and Angus. A few days ago I received a follow up email from Kate informing me the print had arrived safely. She also included this great photo taken outside the very same building. I love […]

The Italian Job

THE ITALIAN JOB Earlier this year I was asked to do a moonlit photo session featuring John Neil Mitchell’s championship winning quadcross bike. John recently won the UK title for the third time (more info here). This month (October) was the first opportunity to get the job done – in part due to poor weather in previous months during the full moon period and also timing the shoot to coincide with both us being available. A few days prior to […]
